Description:

The Spannocchia portion of the Culture and Technology study abroad program will have its focus on the cultural expressions found in the regional vernacular architecture. Students will engage in a hands-on historical stabilization project, typically focused on drywall rehabilitation. Additionally, students will be asked to document through drawing various aspects of the vernacular dwellings on the Spannocchia property and engage in an interpretation as to how the architecture reflects cultural assumptions, habits and norms. To aid in this interpretation students will be exposed to cultural experiences such as a Tuscan cooking class, learning about Tuscan agrarian traditions and the like. The intent is for students to emerge with a sense of how architecture is a palpable and long-lasting cultural medium.
