Program Description:

The program will be a one-week workshop designed to teach students the basics of photojournalism through the production of their own photo essays. All stories will focus on the villages and towns near Spannocchia. Jim Daniels, a professional photojournalist with a 30 year career, will lead students through the production steps, including; story development & research, working respectfully in a foreign culture, establishing trust, ethical concerns, photographic and reportage technique, basic Photoshop and workflow, production design and publication. Students will be serious amateurs and professionals who are comfortable working with digital cameras and are looking to further develop their vision.

Coordinator Biography:

Jim Daniels has been a photojournalist and writer for over thirty years, focusing his career on social justice and human rights. While on staff at the Providence Journal, Jim worked on a story on adoption in Central America which was a runner up for the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting. His freelance career has taken him to fifty countries where he produces stories for editorial and corporate clients. His book, Lives of Service, documents the work of social justice missionaries around the world. A book about the children of the Dominican Republic is in final production. In 2006, Jim complied a global photographic and written report on HIV/AIDS programs in six countries for Family Health International and recently received a grant to document at-risk indigenous people in New Guinea for two museums.
