Program Description:
The Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts offers the first American PhD designed especially for holders of the MFA, conferring a doctorate in philosophy, aesthetics and art theory. Headquartered in Portland, Maine, IDSVA is a residency / distance learning program. Residencies are held at Castello di Spannocchia in Tuscany, Italy, and in NYC. Study includes interrogative travel to art sites worldwide. 2008 destinations include Siena, Florence, Milan and Paris.
Coordinator Biography:
George Smith is founding president of IDSVA and Associate Professor of Philosophy and Visual Culture. Most recently he has contributed with Luce Irigaray and Slavoj Zizek to the forthcoming text, Intermedialities, ed., Hugh Silverman. Professor Smith teaches first year seminar.
