Description:

Draw, paint and/or take photographs on the large Spannocchia agricultural estate and elsewhere in beautiful Tuscany, then create woodblock prints from this “raw material” in our large airy studio. There will be group demonstrations and one-on-one instruction supplemented by art history lectures and day trips to museums and other sites. Although it isn’t necessary to be a printmaker, if you have no prior art training, this workshop will be too challenging. Everyone will be encouraged to work independently outside of class time and of course to express themselves in the way that best suits them. You may find yourself working long into the tranquil nights in the Limonaia with new colleagues to keep you company!

Besides the techniques of woodblock printmaking, we intend to look closely at the rich Etruscan heritage that is the foundation of Tuscan culture. Field trips will include the Etruscan gem Murlo, Fratelli Sanna for cheese tasting, out-of-the-way treasure Arezzo, and of course glorious Siena with its Renaissance marvels amidst winding medieval streets and alleys. You will return home with a deeper appreciation of the cultural layers that make Tuscany so fascinating.

One of the primary goals of the workshop will be to create a small edition of at least one print. Because we observe the printmaking tradition of exchanging impressions, you can expect to go home with an exciting portfolio of your own work and that of your colleagues and instructors as well. The prints and your drawing book will remind you of what you’ve learned and experienced. It will be an ongoing and treasured resource as you reflect on your time in magical Tuscany.

Coordinator Biographies:

Sabra Field lives in Vermont where she and her husband run a studio which publishes her prints. She is best known as a woodblock artist with numerous exhibitions and commissions over a long career. Her teaching is limited to guest appearances and lectures and the two weeks at Spannocchia where she has found wonderfully compatible and eager students with which to share her love of drawing and printmaking and her love of Italy. You can find out more about her by visiting sabrafield.com and by reading her recent book: “In Sight” (see amazon.com).

Marie Weaver lives in Atlanta, Georgia and her professional practice is focused on woodblock printmaking and collage. A graduate of the University of Vermont, Marie’s first professional job was as Sabra’s studio assistant. It is a delight, now many years later, to be reunited with Sabra in teaching others the art of woodblock printmaking—and in such a magnificent setting. During much of her career, Marie was a member of the graphic design faculty of The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her work has appeared in Art Papers magazine, “White Graphics” (Rockport Publications), “Limited Budget/Limitless Creativity” (P.I.E. Books, Tokyo) and other books. You can find out more about her fine art work by visiting marieweaver.com.
