July 14, 2017 - July 21, 2017$2350 – $2750
A VISUAL EXPLORATION OF TUSCANY THROUGH DRAWING AND PAINTING
You have never really seen something until you have tried to draw or paint it. We invite you to join fellow artists for a week long visual exploration to “really see” the splendid Tuscan region of Italy based at the medieval castle and organic agricultural estate of Spannocchia. In addition to your own exploration you will have the opportunity to learn various drawing and painting techniques from professional artist Jerrod Partridge. Our week’s program includes sessions of instructed figure drawing in Spannocchia’s Limonaia, which serves as our formal art studio for the week. The beautiful and luscious spaces of the estate will serve as our outdoor studio for instructed drawing and painting on the grounds.
PROGRAM DETAILS: The program fee is based on double occupancy for a room in the Villa.
Program cost includes: 1. All art instruction. 2. Seven nights’ accommodations (six at Spannocchia and one in Florence). 3. Transportation from the Florence airport to Spannocchia on the day of arrival, transportation for all scheduled off-property excursions, and transportation to Florence on our last full day in Italy. 4. All meals at Spannocchia beginning with dinner Friday evening, July 14, through breakfast on Thursday, July 20. Also included is a group dinner in nearby Siena, and breakfast on Friday, July 21, our last day – 16 meals total. 5. Historical tour of the castle, Cinta Sinese (pig) tour, wine tour, and olive oil tour.
Program costs not included: 1. Airfare. Individuals will be responsible for purchasing their own flights. NOTE: Please check with the group coordinator prior to booking a flight to ensure proper arrival time. 2. Lunch and dinner in Florence on Thursday, July 20. 3. Admission to any museums or other non-scheduled off-property attractions. 4. Taxi to Florence airport on Friday, July 21. 5. Any classes offered at Spannocchia other than listed above.
Information on required art supplies, traveling with or shipping of art supplies will be communicated at a later date.
ACCOMMODATIONS: We will spend our week in The Villa at Castello di Spannocchia. The Villa is the original aristocratic family dwelling on the property. Built by the Spannocchi family in the 12th century, enlarged in the 18th century and then purchased by the Cinelli family in 1925, the Villa is furnished with many original antiques, paintings and family heirlooms. Each room has a lovely view of the Villa gardens, the fruit and olive orchard, and vineyards in the distance. Though ancient, the rooms are modernized with plumbing and electricity. The rooms are not air conditioned; however, fans will be available for your comfort.
THE WEEK LONG EXPERIENCE AT A GLANCE: A glimpse of the week begins with a group dinner on the evening Friday, July 15. Exquisite, authentic Italian cuisine is prepared daily from the estate’s organic gardens and livestock and is served with Spannocchia’s own wine and olive oil. There will be a group drawing session on the morning of Saturday July 16, with an afternoon sketching, sightseeing and shopping excursion to Siena. We will be able to purchase last minute art supplies here. A group dinner will follow. Back at Tenuta di Spannocchia an historical tour will familiarize us with our surroundings. Most days of the week will include a 2 hour drawing or painting session scheduled for the morning and afternoon. It will be completely up to participants as to how many of these sessions in which they take part. A second sketching excursion is planned for mid-week, but the location has yet to be determined.
It’s important that we honor the Italian lifestyle and appreciate the beauty of our surroundings and the pace at Spannocchia. In addition to instruction, free time is planned each day to encourage rest and relaxation. An in ground pool is available on the property. There are also the options of Italian language classes, cooking, tai chi, massages, and various other classes offered by Spannocchia for additional charges. At the end of each day we will gather on the terrace for wine and fellowship with other guests and interns before the al fresco dinner.
On Wednesday, our last evening at Spannocchia, we will gather in the Limonaia to view an exhibition of our group’s work from the week with wine and light food. Often we are joined at the show by staff members, other guests, and interns. Dinner will follow.
Early Thursday morning we will depart Spannocchia to spend our last full day and evening in Florence. You will be on your own to explore and experience the amazing wealth of art history here.
Please join us for this magical week as we visually explore Tuscany together.
